During the second half of my senior year of high school, I interned in the gastroenterology unit of Montefiore Hospital, Wakefield campus. This was part of my Senior Seminar class. In summary, I worked under the Administrative Nurse Manager, helping out with tasks that ultimately enhanced the gastroenterology unit. What follows are what I accomplished and procedures I shadowed during my internship. I also learned some technical skills.
What did I accomplish?
Cancellation Data Input and Analysis
Using data from the GI scheduling software, Provation, I input specific details regarding patients’ cancellation data. I then analyzed the different categories and values such as the reason for cancellation.
Extravasation Data Collection and Visualization
Using extravasation data from an already generated input source, I made various graphs and charts to help visualize the data. In general, I organized these graphs by date.
Modified Hybrid Schedule Proposal
Using data from other hospitals, such as Mount Sinai, I created a proposal advocating for a hybrid work model for nurse administrators. While making this proposal, I learned that nurse managers have some of the highest rates of burnout among all hospital associates.
What did I watch?
While in the operating room, I was able to watch many different procedures including colonoscopy, esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), feeding (PEG) tube insertion, IV insertion.
What did I learn?
I learned how to how to extract medicine from a vial and administer an IV injection.
